MEC Sakhumzi Somyo was appointed in May 2014 by Premier Phumulo Masualle to head the department of Finance, Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism.
He is a member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Executive Committee of the African National Congress and currently serving as Deputy Chairperson in the Province. He is the current Chairperson of the ANC’s Amathole Region.
MEC Somyo served as the Executive Mayor of the Amathole District Municipality for two consecutive terms; 2002 – 2006 and 2007 – 2011. He was the chairman of the Eastern Cape branch of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and a National Executive Committee Member of the Association.
He holds a BA from Fort Hare and a Senior Primary Teacher’s Diploma, has also served as a member of the Amathole Water Board and a non‐executive member of the Housing Development Agency, Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) and South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI).
