As the country observes Freedom Day on 27 April, the Eastern Cape held its official Provincial celebrations at Walter Sisulu Stadium in Mthatha. The day began with the Freedom Day marathon, where participants ran 5 and up to 24 kilometres in the morning.
Eastern Cape Premier, Phumulo Masualle - who ran the 5km race - says it is important to encourage healthy living and active lifestyle through exercising. Premier Masualle said the day should be observed at all times, to remind people where they come from, as well as to reflect how far they have come since obtaining freedom.
The Premier emphasised the importance of emulating values of stalwarts like Mama Albertina Sisulu and Tata Nelson Mandela - whom the country is celebrating their centenaries this year, 2018 - in order to ensure sustainable freedom. He says the two stalwarts' legacies should inspire current generations to carry on with the gains of freedom and ensure further development of the country for future generations.
