Home of Legends hosts Brics Sectoral Meetings

The Eastern Cape Province is hosting the BRICS Sectoral Meetings at the East London International Convention Centre from 28 June to 1 July 2018. Representatives from the BRICS countries have graced our shores to discuss matters of common interest under the theme, “BRICS in Africa: Collaboration for Inclusive Growth and Shared Prosperity in the 4th Industrial Revolution”. The theme is reflective of the core priorities of each one of the BRICS member countries, notably to strive towards the creation of an inclusive society and global partnerships that will bring prosperity to all humankind.
In his welcoming remarks to the delegates, Eastern Cape Premier, Mr Phumulo Masualle said that, “We are encouraged to open up our collective borders as BRICS member States to unleash further tourism growth between and among our countries.”
The meetings serve as the precursor to the 10th BRICS Summit to be held in Johannesburg in July, as well as an extensive calendar of sectoral events throughout the year 2018. The country’s 2018 Chairship is characterized by over 90 meetings including the Summit, Ministerial, Senior Officials and Working Group meetings.
South Africa’s membership of the BRICS nations signals the country’s continued role in the global arena as per the National Development Plan (NDP) which recommends that the country’s global foreign policy positioning should commence with establishing greater leverage in multiple international affiliations.

Of significance also is that the BRICS Grouping celebrates its 10th Anniversary in 2018 and South Africa is honoured to usher in the next decade of broadened and intensified relations within the grouping and among individual countries for more sustainable, equitable and mutually beneficial development.
The outcomes of the BRICS meetings will be reported to BRICS Heads of State/ Government at the 10 BRICS Summit to be hosted in Johannesburg from 25 to 27 July 2018. Areas of cooperation to be reflected on the Summit Declaration has been submitted to DIRCO and final text will be submitted by COGTA.
